Ben Murphy, a former Wisconsin Lutheran College football standout, is in his seventh season on the Warriors coaching staff. He will be returning as a defensive assistant this season after serving as the Warriors' defensive coordinator from 2008-2012 and spending 2013 as the head coach.

As the head coach, Murphy guided the Warriors to a 4-6 overall record, including a 3-3 conference mark for fourth place in the seven-team league. Under Murphy's guidance, WLC's defense ranked second in the NACC in scoring defense and third in the conference in total defense.

In each of Murphy's six seasons directing the defense, WLC ranked in the top three in total defense in the NACC, ranking first in the conference twice (2012, 2009). In 2012, the Warriors defense led NCAA Division III in passing defense, allowing just 123 passing yards per game. The defense also ranked fourth in Division III in total defense (232 yards allowed per game), fifth in pass efficiency defense, and seventh in scoring defense (13 points per game allowed).

Murphy mentored nine players to all-conference honors as head coach in 2013.

Since taking over as defensive coordinator in 2008, Murphy has coached 34 defensive players to all-conference honors, including two conference Defensive Players of the Year in Luke Sebald (2013) and Kaylan Gaines (2010).

The 2012 defense led the NAC in six categories, including total defense, scoring defense, passing defense, rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, and interceptions (19).

Murphy returned to his alma mater after serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., a position he held until May 2008.

He worked as a graduate assistant at NSU from January 2007 to January 2008 before being promoted to a full-time staff member. Murphy obtained his master's degree in educational studies with an emphasis in physical education and administration from Northern State.

Murphy was a four-year starter (2001-2004) on the defensive line for the Warriors. He earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors as a senior and was named to the All-MIAA Second Team as a junior. He graduated from WLC in December 2004 with a bachelor's degree in broad field social sciences and a minor in coaching. Murphy later returned to Wisconsin Lutheran in 2006 to serve as video coordinator and defensive line coach.

Murphy, who was born February 2, 1983, resides in Wauwatosa with his wife, Erin, and sons, Bryar and Cole.
