Football Wins NACC Opener At Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Freshman Nick Yockey (Gig Harbor, Wash.) threw four touchdown passes to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College football team to a 27-13 NACC-opening win at Rockford Saturday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field. The win marked the Warriors' 12th straight over the Regents.

  • The Warriors and Regents traded punts on the first four possessions of the game despite both teams facing fourth down and manageable distances.
  • WLC took advantage of a short Rockford punt and took over at the hosts 38-yard line to begin its third drive of the first quarter. Facing 3rd-and-10 on RU's 17 yard line, Yockey connected with senior Marquis Davis (Urbana, Ill.) for a 17-yard touchdown with 5:31 left in the first quarter and a 7-0 lead.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran stopped the Regents' 15-play, 59-yard drive on a fourth down incompletion from the six, but the visitors were later forced to punt after they took over on downs.
  • The Regents tied the game at 7-7 with 7:51 left before halftime on a LaVar Johnson Jr. three-yard touchdown run.
  • The Warriors answered right back following a 10-play, 55-yard drive that saw Yockey connect with senior Matt Brannan (Huntley, Ill.) for an eight-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead with 3:17 left before halftime.
  • After WLC's defense forced a quick three-and-out, the Warriors drove 75 yards on 10 plays in just 2:02 as Yockey found senior Tyree Gamble (Huntsville, Texas) for a 30-yard score and 21-7 lead.
  • The Regents returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards and then used a 39-yard pass play to setup 1st-and-goal from the three. WLC's defense stood strong and stopped Rockford on the next play and the half came to an end.
  • Rockford drove 96 yards on 14 plays on its second drive of the third quarter and the hosts came within a score after Tyler Burnham found Kalan Miller for a seven-yard hookup as the score stood 21-13 with 5:38 on the clock.
  • Neither team mustered much offense until the Warriors capitalized on a fumble recovered by senior Zach Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) with 8:59 left in the game. WLC found the end zone just two plays later when Yockey threw a 14-yard touchdown to sophomore Brandon Livingston (Carson, Calif.) for the game's final score.
  • The Regents remaining two drives resulted in a fourth down fumble and interception as the final score read 27-13.

  • Yockey finished 21-for-38 for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman Brevin Jegerlehner (Sun Prairie, Wis.) rushed 16 times for 137 yards as the Warriors totaled 372 yards of offense.
  • Sophomore Gabe Luce (Oakley, Mich.) caught three passes for 43 yards and was one of nine players to haul in at least one catch on the day.
  • WLC's defense forced three turnovers and was led by junior Mykael Ignaszak's (Cudahy, Wis.) career and game-high 19 tackles. He also tallied 2.5 tackles for loss, including two sacks. Freshman Jade Burge (Woodland, Ala.) and senior CJ Grahn (Beloit, Wis.) added 11 tackles and an interception each.
  • The Warriors won their 12th straight game over the Regents and now lead the all-time series 17-3

  • Tyler Burnham threw for 170 yards and LaVar Johnson Jr. rushed for 113 on 28 carries to lead the Regents, who accounted for 379 yards of total offense. Jallen Bashford recorded a team-high 14 tackles for Rockford's defense.

  • The Warriors finally return home to Raabe Stadium for the first time in over a month when they host Eureka (2-2, 0-1 NACC) next Saturday for Hall of Fame Day.
