First Half Deficit Too Much For Warriors In Road Opener

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. ( - The Wisconsin Lutheran College football team could not erase a 24-point halftime deficit as the Warriors fell to NAIA non-conference opponent Lawrence Tech 34-14 Saturday afternoon at Blue Devils Stadium.

  • Sophomore Ty Castillo (San Antonio, Texas) blocked a punt on Lawrence Tech's opening possession setting the Warriors up in great field position at the Blue Devils 27-yard line, but WLC turned the ball over on downs. Lawrence Tech scored on its next drive on a 51-yard touchdown pass with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran punted on its next possession and the Blue Devils got their second touchdown of the game on a 12-yard pass hookup on the first play of the second quarter.
  • After another Warriors punt, LTU added onto its total with a 26-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the score to 21-0 with just under 13 minutes left in the half.
  • Following a WLC turnover, Lawrence Tech added another three points on a 20-yard field goal, making the score 24-0, which stood heading into halftime.
  • The Blue Devils missed a field goal on their opening possession of the second half and freshman Nick Yockey (Gig Harbor, Wash.) found sophomore Gabe Luce (Oakley, Mich.) on a 74-yard touchdown pass. Yockey also completed a two-point conversion pass to sophomore Alan Jackson (Norwalk, Calif.) to cut the deficit to two scores at 24-8.
  • Lawrence Tech responded just three plays later on a 66-yard touchdown pass. The score gave the Blue Devils a 31-8 lead.
  • The Warriors scored again on their next possession when Yockey found freshman Gavin Winter (Howards Grove, Wis.) for a 23-yard touchdown pass. WLC's two-point try was unsuccessful.
  • The Blue Devils marched down the field on the ensuing possession, kicking a 25-yard field goal to give the hosts the 34-14 lead right before the end of the third quarter.
  • WLC found itself knocking on the door again, but the Warriors' drive stalled on the Blue Devils eight-yard line on an incomplete pass on fourth down.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran once again found iself in position to score on its final fourth quarter possession, but was halted on LTU's 15-yard line. The Blue Devils proceeded to run out the clock on their final possession of the game.

  • Yockey finished 19-for-39 for 313 yards and two touchdowns. His top target was Luce, who caught two passes for 83 yards. Senior Javion Morgan (Naples, Fla.) also had 38 yards on two grabs.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran accumulated 336 yards of total offense, of which 319 were in the air. WLC was not able to get much going on the ground rushing for just 17 yards.
  • Defensively, Castillo led the Warriors with 13 total tackles. Seniors Mykael Ignaszak (Cudahy, Wis.), Jody Styczynski (Coleman, Wis.), and CJ Grahn (Beloit, Wis.) added six tackles apiece.

  • Tyler Kulka passed for 287 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-27 attempts. Tanner Foley led all rushers with 186 yards on 23 attempts. Derrick Hinton caught nine passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Kendyl Williams had five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Blue Devils had 558 yards of total offense.
  • Daniel Macks and Drake Barry had six tackles to lead Lawrence Tech, Will Stertz added a sack, and Christian Clack-Broaden and Ryan Crowley had interceptions.

  • The Warriors continue their road stretch next Saturday when they travel to Adrian, Michigan, to face the Adrian Bulldogs (0-2) at Docking Stadium for the MIAA-NACC Challenge.
