Football Falls Late To Rival Falcons In Lutheran Bowl

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College football team had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but a fourth-down pass was batted away in the endzone as Concordia Wisconsin scored 21 unanswered points and held on for a 21-14 Luther Cup victory over the Warriors Saturday afternoon at Tomasini Stadium.

  • The rivalry game was scoreless for most of the first half, but the Warriors were able to get on the board first late in the second quarter.
  • On a drive that started on the CUW 46-yard line, Alan Jackson (Norwalk, Calif.) scampered into the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes to go in the half for a 7-0 Wisconsin Lutheran lead.
  • On the ensuing Falcons drive, Ronny Snider (Hayward, Wis.) forced a fumble giving WLC great field position. The Warriors scored just two plays later when Patrick Mathieson (New Port Richey, Fla.) found Javion Morgan (Naples, Fla.) for a 17-yard touchdown pitch and catch.
  • Concordia Wisconsin answered just before the half when Josh Turner broke free and ran for a 39-yard touchdown to cap just a five-play, 80-yard scoring drive. WLC held a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
  • On the Warriors' second play from scrimmage to open the second half, Mathieson was stripped of the football and the Falcons picked up the fumble and ran it into the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown, knotting the score at 14-14.
  • Later in the third quarter, the Falcons were knocking on the door again, but an Aaron Nixon pass was intercepted in the endzone by Tony Orlando (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), preserving the tie game through three quarters.
  • CUW took the lead for the first time late in the fourth quarter on a James Linn seven-yard touchdown run that capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive.
  • The Warriors had one last chance to tie or take the lead after driving 52 yards with just over a minute to go, but J.K. Witkofski's (Racine, Wis.) pass to Chrystyan Woyak (Juneau, Wis.) on fourth down from the Falcons' 32-yard line was broken up in the endzone.

  • The Warriors had 251 yards of total offense, 178 of which came through the air.
  • Joshua Cason (Deltona, Fla.) rushed for 56 yards, averaging 4.0 yards per carry on 14 rushes.
  • Mathieson completed 14 passes for 165 yards and a score.
  • Cory Diedrick (Little Chute, Wis.) caught three passes for 43 yards, Nick Charles-Crowl (Bradenton, Fla.) had three catches for 33 yards, and Woyak hauled in three passes for 30 yards.
  • Mat Guedel (Belvidere, Ill.) had 12 tackles to lead the Warriors, while Trevor Seewald (Coleman, Wis.) added 10.
