Football's Comeback Ends With OT Win Over Regents

MILWAUKEE ( – The Wisconsin Lutheran College football team overcame a 17-3 fourth quarter deficit to force overtime and win a thrilling 26-20 Homecoming contest Saturday afternoon at Raabe Stadium. It was the Warriors' first win of the 2018 season and their 11th straight victory over the Regents.

  • After a Warriors fumble deep in their own territory on their first possession of the game, the Regents' Cody Kupsik converted a 27-yard field goal with 8:37 left in the first quarter,
  • The Warriors answered and tied the game early in the second quarter on a Sasha Bornschlegl (Rochester, Minn.) 23-yard field goal to cap a drive that went 75 yards and lasted over seven minutes.
  • Rockford regained the lead just over one minute later when Delayno Mack found tight end Adam Ambrogio on a 48-yard pass over the middle. The score stood 10-3 in favor of RU heading into the half.
  • The Regents found the end zone again on their first play of the second half following a Warriors punt when Chance Manning scampered 86 yards for a touchdown, giving RU a 17-3 lead.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, Patrick Mathieson (New Port Ritchey, Fla.) found Marquis Davis (Urbana, Ill.) in the front corner of the end zone for a 32-yard spectacular touchdown catch to trim WLC's deficit to just seven.
  • The Warriors tied the score seven minutes later when Mathieson threw across his body and found J.K. Witkofski (Racine, Wis.) who darted into the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-nine pass play.
  • Rockford answered on its ensuing drive scoring three points on a Kupsik 20-yard field goal with just 1:15 to go in the contest.
  • Bornschlegl tied the game up at 20-20 after he converted on a 33-yard field goal to force overtime with just 0:23 seconds left. The score was setup by a 47-yard pass completion from Mathieson to Chrystyan Woyak (Juneau, Wis.).
  • The Regents had the ball first in the overtime period but failed to convert on a 33-yard field goal.
  • WLC converted on its first possession of the overtime period when Mathieson connected with Woyak again in the back corner of the endzone for the 13-yard winning touchdown on a third-and-10 play.

  • The Warriors racked up a season-high 430 yards of total offense, 274 through the air and 156 on the ground, both season highs.
  • Mathieson completed 24-of-42 passing attempts for 274 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Todd Lehman (Harvard, Ill.) rushed for 81 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry on 14 rushes to lead Wisconsin Lutheran's ground attack, while Alan Jackson (Norwalk, Calif.) followed with 53 yards on the ground.
  • Woyak caught six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, while Witkofski caught five passes for 60 yards and a score.
  • Devonte Jones (Vero Beach, Fla.) had seven tackles, while Mykael Ignaszak (Cudahy, Wis.) accounted for six for the Warriors.
  • The game was the sixth overtime contest in program history for the Warriors and their first since 2015.

  • Manning rushed for 133 yards on 13 carries for the Regents, an average of 10.2 yards per rush.
  • Mack passed for 193 yards and a score while completing 15-of-22 passing attempts.
  • Kalan Miller collected six catches for 96 yards.
  • Malik Johnson recorded nine tackles for the Regents, two of which were for loss.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran continues conference play next Saturday when it travels to Eureka, Illinois to face NACC-affiliate member Eureka (4-0, 1-0 NACC).
