Warriors Hang On For Wild Win In Split At IIT

JOLIET, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team saw a six-run lead slip away, but scored seven runs over the final three innings and held on for a wild 14-13 win in 10 innings over Illinois Tech in game two of their doubleheader Monday night at Route 66 Stadium. The Scarlet Hawks scored three unanswered runs, including a walk-off home run to win the opener, 3-2.

  • Both starting pitchers cruised through the first five innings as neither allowed more than one runner to reach in an inning.
  • The Warriors grabbed a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Brannigan Hart's (Davie, Fla.) triple scored Evan Sadowski (New Berlin, Wis.) and Jake Schwall's (West Allis, Wis.) groundout brought home Hart.
  • WLC's Dylan Knoespel (Brillion, Wis.) allowed just two hits through six complete, but Illinois Tech evened the score in the seventh. After the first two batters reached, a one-out double to left center from Brandon Bennitt knotted the score at 2-2.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, but the Scarlet Hawks escaped without any damage.
  • After the first two were retired in the last of the ninth, Ted Howell homered to left field to send IIT to the 3-2 win.
  • Joey Tilley (Muskego, Wis.) led the Warriors with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Knoespel suffered the tough loss after allowing three runs over 8.2 innings. The junior struck out three.

  • The Warriors took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after four straight singles, including RBI hits from Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.) and Tilley.
  • WLC tacked on another run in the second on an RBI triple to left center from Hart that scored Jack Schroeder (Bristol, Wis.) for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Scarlet Hawks scored their first run of the game in the second on a sac fly to center from Ted Howell.
  • Following a scoreless third inning, Wisconsin Lutheran took advantage of a two-out error that scored Sadowski and Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) for a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Green and White built a six-run cushion in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Schroeder and Sadowski for a 7-1 lead.
  • Illinois Tech rallied with two outs and nobody on in its half of the fifth with five straight batters reaching, including three hits to cut WLC's lead to 7-3.
  • IIT erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to take its first lead of the game at 11-7. The Scarlet Hawks collected four hits and took advantage of three errors and five walks in the frame.
  • The hosts added a single tally to their total in the seventh, taking advantage of a two-out walk and a single for a five-run lead over WLC.
  • The Warriors fought right back in the eighth with five runs to even the score at 12-12. Lehman ripped a two-run double to left center, Tilley followed with a sac fly, Lehman scored on an error, and Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) reached home on a wild pitch to tie the game.
  • WLC jumped ahead in the ninth thanks to three straight one-out singles from Hart, Schwall, and Lehman as Hart scored the go-ahead run for a 13-12 lead.
  • The Scarlet Hawks used a single, passed ball, sac bunt, and suicide squeeze in the ninth to even the score for the second time at 13-13 and send the game to extras.
  • Poblocki and Schroeder each drew one-out walks in the 10th and after Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.) reached safely on a fielder's choice error, Poblocki scored the eventual game-winning run on another fielder's choice.
  • IIT had two batters reach with one out in the 10th, but Levi Schriefer (San Diego, Calif.) entered the game and induced a game-ending double play to the first batter he faced to slam the door.
  • Hart, Schwall, Lehman, and Tilley each collected three hits in a wild game two win. Lehman drove in four runs and Hart scored three times. Joe Serbiak (Brookfield, Wis.) pitched 2.1 innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the year. Schriefer notched his first save.

  • Howell went 2-for-4 for the Scarlet Hawks in the opener and Jacob Geiger pitched the final 2.0 innings in relief for the win. Bennitt was 3-for-5 with three runs scored in game two for IIT. Wyatt Ronek allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of relief and was handed the loss.

  • The Warriors will next travel to Benedictine (14-9, 6-3 NACC) Wednesday for the second game of their originally scheduled doubleheader from March 31. WLC will be the home team for the game. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. at the BenU Sports Complex.
