Haverford Hands Warriors First Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team was handed its first sweep of the 2019 season Friday on its final day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Warriors dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Haverford, 15-3 and 8-4, at Terry Park. WLC returns to Milwaukee with its first winning Florida trip at 5-4 since 2015.

  • The Warriors plated an early first-inning run after Gunner Amelunk (Wales, Wis.) and Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) reached base to open the game via a walk and hit by pitch. Two batters later, Amelunk scored on a two-out passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Fords responded in their half of the first with four unearned runs off a pair of hits and three errors for a 4-1 lead.
  • After a scoreless second, the hosts added a run on a one-out RBI double for their fifth run of the opening game.
  • WLC cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth with two runs. Jayson Walczak-Zelem (Oak Creek, Wis.) and Amelunk collected consecutive one-out RBI singles as part of a four-hit fifth inning.
  • Haverford had eight of its first nine batters reach in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on four hits to break the game open. They added a four-spot in the sixth on just one hit for the 15-3 final tally.
  • Dylan Knoespel (Brillion, Wis.) suffered his first loss of the season, pitching 4.1 innings and surrendering six earned runs.
  • Five different players tallied hits for the Warriors in the first game.

  • Haverford went in front 2-0 in the first inning over Wisconsin Lutheran with two unearned runs on a pair of fielder's choice scoring plays.
  • The Warriors got one of those runs back in their half of the first on a two-out RBI single to left from Joey Tilley (Muskego, Wis.) that scored Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.).
  • WLC left a pair of runners stranded in the second and the bases loaded in the third, but couldn't plate a run as the score stood 2-1 heading to the fourth.
  • The Fords gained a two-run advantage in the fourth on a squeeze play with one out for a 3-1 lead.
  • Five of the first six Warriors reached base in the home half of the fourth as the Green and White rallied for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.) and Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.) each provided RBI singles and Tilley roped an RBI double in the frame.
  • Haverford answered right back with five runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to double-up the Warriors at 8-4.
  • WLC threatened in the sixth by loading the bases after two outs, but couldn't add any more to its total.
  • Spencer Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.) suffered his first loss on the hill, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out four.
  • Hart reached base on all four of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a run, RBI, and walk to lead the Warriors. Lehman and Tilley added two hits each.

  • Owen Plambeck went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs, while Ben Browning drove in four runs and scored twice in game one for HC. Andrew Johnson improved to 2-0 on the mound after allowing two runs in 5.0 innings.
  • Luke Wallis and Nick Perez had three hits apiece for the Fords in game two. Eric Kopczynski earned the win by tossing the final 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
