Offense, Pitching Carry Warriors To Doubleheader Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team earned its first series sweep of the season in dominating fashion, defeating Finlandia 17-2 and 10-0 Tuesday afternoon at Terry Park at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

  • The Warriors cracked the scoring column quickly as Gunner Amelunk (Wales, Wis.) drew a leadoff walk and stole two bases before Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis.) doubled off the fence in left field. Schwall then stole third base and scored on a single from Brannigan Hart (Davie, Fla.) to give WLC a 2-0 lead after the first.
  • WLC tallied a six-spot in the second inning to break the lead open at 8-0. Joey Tilley (Muskego, Wis.) doubled the Warriors' lead with a towering home run to left field in the second. Two more runs scored on a Hart single where Schwall and Jack Schroeder (Bristol, Wis.) scored on a throwing error by the left fielder.
  • The Lions got a pair of runs back with a two-run home run from Jean Pimental to trim the lead to 8-2.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran responded with a run in the third on an RBI single down the third base line from Schwall.
  • Ethan Orcutt (East Dubuque, Ill.) drew a bases loaded walk and Amelunk doubled deep to left to score two runs. Schwall tallied two more RBIs on a line drive single up the middle to push WLC's advantage to 14-2.
  • Nick Poblocki (Bartlett, Ill.) and Tilley tallied RBIs in the fifth to push the lead to 17-2.
  • Sid Lehman (Theresa, Wis.) cruised on the mound, throwing a full 7.0 innings and allowing only three hits. Lehman allowed just one hit over his last 4.0 innings of work.
  • The Warriors racked up 13 hits in the contest, led by Schwall's 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Amelunk, Hart, Lehman, and Schroeder also recorded two hits each.

  • Finlandia recorded two hits in the first inning, but Jacob Kopplin (Rowlett, Texas) stranded a pair of runners on base.
  • Schwall got the Green and White on the board in the first again with a two-run double to right field to put WLC up 2-0.
  • Johnny Offenbacher (Waukesha, Wis.) and Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) each had RBI singles in the second to double the score to 4-0.
  • After a pair of scoreless innings, the Warriors struck for a six-run fifth inning. The first seven Warriors recorded hits to start the inning.
  • Kopplin allowed just two hits after the first inning and held the Lions scoreless. He pitched 7.0 scoreless en route to his first career win, striking out eight and walking none.
  • WLC tallied 15 hits, led by two each from Dominick, Schwall, Lehman, Offenbacher, Matthew Schulenburg (Hampshire, Ill.), and Jake Constien (Sun Prairie, Wis.).
  • The Warriors start off the season for 4-1 for the first time since 2016.

  • Three players recorded hits in the opening game for Finlandia. Matt Griffith allowed three earned runs in 1.0 inning to suffer the loss.
  • Jeff Saich suffered the game two loss, allowing nine earned runs and 14 hits over 4.0 innings. Three different Lions recorded hits in the backend of the doubleheader.

  • WLC enjoys an off day tomorrow before playing Pitt-Bradford (5-2) Thursday at the Player Development Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. CST. The Panthers split a doubleheader against Haverford Tuesday in Fort Myers.
